On October 2, 2008, Service-now.com announced certification by the U.S. Department of Commerce with the United States-European Union (EU) Safe Harbor Framework. The Safe Harbor Framework facilitates secure, uninterrupted data transfers from the EU to the United States.
The European Commission's Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data to countries outside of the European Economic Area to nations that do not meet the EU standard for privacy protection. Approved by the EU in 2000, Safe Harbor provides a streamlined means for US organizations to comply with EU data standards for protecting personal data privacy and improve service to their clients in the EU. Almost 25 percent of the Service-now.com customer base is headquartered in Europe.
Vendors volunteer to certify with the Safe Harbor Framework to demonstrate commitment to customer data privacy and currently more than 1,500 U.S. companies participate in the Safe Harbor Framework. As the program has grown, it has achieved global recognition as one of the best ways to meet the requirements of the EU’s Data Protection Directive.
